Things to do in snowy mountains

We recently shared a few of our favorite things in our hometown Jindabyne with you, but that was only the start! There’s an abundance of things to do in the Snowy Mountains and while the views and landscapes may change from season to season, the outdoor activities in the Snowy Mountains continue all year round.

When you’re not waxing your skis, wakeboarding Lake Jindy or lacing up your hiking boots, we invite you to take some time to discover our hometown, chat with the locals over a cup of coffee (or local brew!) and watch the sunset over the lake. Jindabyne is the gateway to the beautiful Snowy Mountains but it’s also a holiday destination in its own right! If you’re looking for things to do down under in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, Alpine Country Holidays has the scoop!

Locals and visitors to Jindabyne are getting ready to ride the slopes of Australia’s top ski resorts and escape into the backcountry for alpine adventures in the secluded Snowies. Jindabyne is the closest town to Australia’s ski fields and from June to September, our backyard transforms to an alpine playground for outdoor enthusiasts looking to play in the snow. Don’t delay! Book today with Alpine Country Holidays to play in the Snowy Mountains of NSW this winter season.

Fishing

Jindabyne is a prime destination for year-round fishing with scenic rivers, mountain streams and the crystal clear waters of Lake Jindabyne. The peak season for fishing in the Snowy Mountains runs from October to June and whether you’re casting a fly on the pristine Thredbo River or trolling for trout on the lake, there’s a high chance of a trophy catch. During the cooler months of June to October, many of Jindabyne’s rivers are closed for the spawn run but this is prime time to troll for trout from the shores of Lake Jindabyne. If you’re travelling with kids, the Eucumbene Trout Farm and Gaden Trout Hatchery offer a fun, family-friendly fishing adventure for the whole family. Not sure where to begin? Just chat to our guest services, our local outfitters and fishing guides love to share their local knowledge (and secret spots) with our guests!

Horseriding

The remote outback of the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park is considered one of Australia’s top horseriding destinations! It was this scenic wilderness with free-roaming brumbies that inspired the well-known “Man from Snowy River” and today, visitors to Jindabyne can experience that same authentic adventure in Australia’s legendary high-country. Whether you’re taking a pony ride through the plains or a trek to Australia’s highest peaks, horseriding in Jindabyne is an outback adventure like no other.

Local & Backcountry Tours

Whether you’re venturing into the wild Australian outback on a backcountry tour, riding the rapids of the Thredbo River on a river sled, exploring historical homesteads on an e-bike or heading off the beaten path on the highest Segway Tour in Australia, there’s a Jindabyne tour to suit all our guests.

Scenic Drives

Put some time aside to take a scenic drive from Jindabyne. There are two main scenic routes, the Kosciuszko Alpine Way and Snowy Mountain Highway, with spectacular and diverse scenery at every twist and turn. Gather up the family, let us pack you a picnic, and head out on a scenic journey to explore historic gold rush towns, limestone caves, thermal pools and the top attractions of the Snowy Mountains.

Everyone loves the trails at Jindabyne! Whether you’re taking a lakeside stroll, bushwalking the rugged terrain to a glacial lake or taking the scenic summit trail to Australia’s highest peak, Mt. Kosciuszko has hiking trails in Jindabyne for all ages.
